Collection: Rooted Beef

Cattle from Rooted Beef are raised from birth to finish on a farm northwest of Edmonton owned by Chad and Stacey Meunier. The mission of the farm goes beyond sustainability - the growth and efforts of the last two decades have been to improve the land and ecology for generational stewardship. See below for more information.

Rooted Beef

Rooted in regenerative farming:

The fourth generation, over the last 20 years, has assembled a growing parcel of pasture and developed it into a thriving ranch for mother cows and their offspring. Through persistent rotational grazing management, the land has become three times more productive than conventional grazing. Forested areas are preserved, and acreage development has been restricted. As a result, the ranch is home to a diversity of wildlife. Soil health continues to improve, sequestering carbon and nutrients while improving drought and wildfire risk mitigation. It's only recently this method of agriculture has been termed "regenerative".

Rooted in animal welfare:

The growth of the farm in recent years is due to Chad and Stacey’s combined passion for grass management and their love for raising cows and livestock well. It takes a lot of intention and deliberate management to maintain a happy cow herd. Most cow-calf producers are busy people with 300 cows; the Meunier's have just under 5000 cows that calve annually and raise their young with minimal human intervention aside from rotational grazing and monitoring herd safety.

Rooted in human potential:

The farm's mission is “Thriving plants, animals, and people” and is the cornerstone of decision-making. Service and support for the betterment of family, staff, and the community date back to the first generation of the farm. It remains a central driving force as the fifth generation enjoys an upbringing anchored in past ways.

As direct marketing develops, the focus will shift to improving meat quality beyond grading standards. As science evolves on the link between animal health and nutrition and its interaction with human diets, by
controlling all ingredients of the cattle lifecycle, Rooted Beef can bring a unique product to our customers.

Rooted in continual improvement:

The year 2025 marks the 125th anniversary of our great-grandfather's founding of our farm. Navigating from St. Albert in 1900, he was the first settler in the region. He focused on raising cattle and horses and was integral in supporting the community that developed.

Generations that followed used the tools available based on the evolving science of agriculture. Today, the fourth generation has spent over 20 years perfecting pasture management of the cow herd, becoming one of
the largest cow-calf operations in the province, rooted in regenerative practices. Our next optimization focuses on incorporating more regenerative elements into the finishing phase of cattle, building upon animal health and welfare while boosting the nutritional density of the final meat product. The grain-finishing phase of cattle production sometimes gets bad press, but when done right, its efficiency results in the lowest carbon and ecological footprint, while the eating profile of grain-finished beef remains unmatched.
