Modern Pastures was created to make it more convenient for consumers to purchase great quality meats directly from farmers. The keystone farm and initial brand focus is Rooted beef, provided by Meunier Livestock Ltd.

Chad and Stacey Meunier are the fourth generation operating Meunier Livestock, a large mixed-farming operation northwest of Edmonton. They have focused for over 20 years on expanding the cow-calf operation through diligent management using practices regarded today as regenerative agriculture.

Their brother, Wade Meunier, has been focused downstream on meat processing and marketing for over 20 years. He's been a senior manager in several meat processing operations and spent a significant portion of his career in the lamb industry.

Together, we share a strong belief that ruminate livestock production (beef, lamb, and bison) is good for the environment when managed well. From a nutritional density standpoint these meats are also the best raised meat available for human nutrition.

When we looked at the direct meat business landscape, we wanted to bring more stability to supply through larger farm partners doing great work at scale and secure a Federally inspected supply chain to reach more Canadian urban markets. We will add more brands to leverage our infrastructure. Our initial focus on frozen meat and shelf-stable meat products is also a zero-waste strategy to bring value to our customers. Down the road, we will review adding a fresh meat subscription option.

Over the last 80 years, Canadians went from 32% of us living on farms to just 1.6 % in 2021. As our population becomes more urbanized, we are losing vital connections to agriculture and its role in growing food in sync with nature. It is too easy to reduce farming's impact to single metrics like greenhouse gas emissions while overlooking all the benefits grazing animals bring to the balance of things.
