The Science Behind Sodium and Potassium: Understanding the Mineral Balance

In this part of our nutrition series, we want to talk about something that’s constantly oversimplified: sodium and potassium. You usually hear them treated as opposites. Sodium is framed as something to avoid. Potassium is framed as something to chase. But the body doesn’t actually work that way.

Sodium and potassium are partners. They work together to control hydration, muscle movement, nerve signaling, and how your cells stay balanced and energized. You can’t really talk about one without the other.

When we were developing our Clean Protein Beef Snacks, this relationship kept coming up again and again. Not as a trend, but as real physiology that affects how people actually feel day today.

They Work as a Team, Not Opposites

One of the biggest misunderstandings in nutrition is the idea that sodium itself is the problem. The truth is, sodium is essential for life. The issue usually shows up when sodium intake is high and potassium intake is low. That imbalance is where people often run into trouble.

Inside every single cell in your body is a system known as the sodium–potassium pump. It’s been studied in human physiology for decades. A major review published in The American Journal of Physiology describes how this cellular system constantly moves sodium out of the cell and pulls potassium in. That movement is what allows nerves to fire, muscles to contract, fluids to move correctly, and cells to maintain stability.

In simple terms:

  • Sodium helps regulate fluid outside the cell
  • Potassium helps regulate fluid inside the cell
  • Your body is constantly exchanging the two to stay balanced

When either mineral is too low, that system becomes less efficient. This is often when people notice symptoms like cramping, fatigue, headaches, poor heat tolerance, or brain fog.

This is also why real hydration isn’t just about drinking water. It’s about having the right mineral balance to go with it.

Why Potassium Often Gets Missed

Most modern diets aren’t short on sodium. What they are short on is potassium. Potassium mainly comes from whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and minimally processed ingredients, which don’t always show up regularly in fast, on the go eating patterns.

Large public health analyses published through the National Institutes of Health have shown that people who consume adequate potassium, especially in relation to sodium, tend to have better blood pressure regulation and lower long-term cardiovascular risk. In other words, potassium isn’t just a “nice addition.” It helps shape how the body actually handles sodium.

This is why the solution isn’t simply “eat less salt.” It’s about restoring better mineral balance.

Why This Matters in a Protein Snack

A lot of people use protein snacks the same way they use coffee. For early mornings. Long workdays. Training sessions. Cold chores. Long drives. Busy weeks.

When food plays that role, mineral balance actually matters. It directly affects:

  • Hydration
  • Energy throughout the day
  • Muscle performance and recovery
  • Focus and mental clarity

Why We Focused on Potassium From the Start

When we started developing our beef snacks, we knew two things right away: we needed to use salt, but we wanted our snacks to be as low sodium as possible while still tasting good, and a salt with a good potassium balance. 

Once we found that, everything else came together naturally. The seasoning worked. The flavour worked. The formulation felt right, and tasted great!

The Hard Choice We Had to Make on Sourcing

This was one of the tougher decisions we had to make.

All of our beef is 100 percent Canadian.
Ninety-seven percent of our ingredients come directly from Canada.
All of our suppliers are Canadian.

But Canada doesn’t currently produce a sea salt with the potassium levels we needed.

That left us with two options:

Use standard Canadian salt and qualify for a “Product of Canada” label, or use the higher potassium sea salt and accept “Made with domestic and imported ingredients."

We chose the imported salt. Not because it was easier, but because it allowed us to make a better product for the people eating it. Sometimes doing what’s right nutritionally means giving up the cleanest marketing label. We were okay with that trade.

What Good Mineral Balance Actually Supports

When sodium and potassium are working together the way they’re meant to, they support:

  • Steady hydration without bloating
  • Muscles that work without constant cramping
  • More stable energy
  • Better recovery after physical work
  • Clearer thinking on long days

This is the kind of support most people care about far more than buzzwords.

Choosing Foods That Respect How the Body Works

If there’s one simple takeaway here, it’s that sodium and potassium work best together. Better health doesn’t come from demonizing salt. It comes from supporting balance.

That means choosing foods that are minimally processed, and formulated with intention.

For us this mindset shows up everywhere. In how we raise our animals, how we manage land, and in the smaller decisions, like what kind of salt we choose for our meat snacks.

A Personal Note on Research

During product development, we spent a lot of time learning about electrolyte physiology through applied nutrition education. One brand that shaped our understanding along the way was LMNT, which we have personally used and loved for a long time! While they influenced how we think about minerals, the final formulation decisions came from physiology, sourcing realities, and what we truly believed would serve our customers best.
